Welcome to the 2019-2020 school year! I will be teaching your child ELA (reading, grammar, spelling, writing). I will try to follow the homework helpline assignments as best I can. As always, there may be some unforeseeable events. Please keep in mind we need to have an open line of communication for you the student/parent to have a great year.

We will have our reading test on Wednesday on The Man Who Named the Clouds.  Students need to know their vocabulary, how to find the answer using context clues, and comprehension skills. Grammar test will be Wednesday, too.  The test is on action and linking verbs.  Students were given a list of being verbs to know for the test.  They will find action and linking verbs in sentences. AR is due by the 30th of January. Social Studies waterways project is due Tuesday January 31.  All students received a handout with 5 different assignments.  Students are to pick 1 and follow the specific instructions. Have a great week, Mrs. Herring

Homework for the weekend is to write 5 sentences circling the linking verb and underlining the action verb. There is a reading test on Wednesday for The Man Who Named the Clouds.  Study vocabulary and how to find important details in a story. Have a great weekend! Mrs. Herring

Thursday January 19

There is grammar homework for both classes.  We have started action and linking verbs today.  Students are to write 5 sentences and underline the linking verb.  Please review nouns and verbs as there is still much misunderstanding. Have a great night! Tomorrow is dress down day.  Students can wear jeans or sweats, but they must wear a Spartan approved shirt or spirit day shirt. Mrs. Herring

Grammar:   We will begin to discuss action and linking verbs.  Verbs are not new, but we are now going to classify them.  Test will be next week. Friday is a dress down day for $1. Have a great week! Mrs. Herring

Spelling:  We will resume on the 17th with List 11.  Students will get new lists in their Friday folders. Please do not lose.  If the list does get misplaced, the lists are in the reading workbook and on Mrs. Gierka's homework helpline. Grammar:   We will be testing tomorrow on plural possessive nouns.  I encourage the students to write the singular word, then plural, then possessive.  This helps to see the transformation of the word before adding the 's or s'. Reading:   We will be testing tomorrow on So You Want to be President .  Students should study their vocabulary and main idea, fact and opinion.  We have also been practicing Text Dependent Analysis questions which enforce using the information provided to support the answer. This week we will be reviewing Unit 2 in reading with a benchmark assessment.  Students will be applying skills learned in reading and concepts learned in grammar.  We will also be taking DIBELS tests which measure the students words per m
