Welcome to the 2019-2020 school year! I will be teaching your child ELA (reading, grammar, spelling, writing). I will try to follow the homework helpline assignments as best I can. As always, there may be some unforeseeable events. Please keep in mind we need to have an open line of communication for you the student/parent to have a great year.

Students will begin to read Life at the Top.   They have their vocabulary words on a handout, in their textbook, and next week they will have it in their interactive notebook.  Students in periods 1 & 2 have them in their Vocabulary Power Journal.  Test will include vocabulary used in sentences.  We started to discuss text structure in class and how you can use it/identify them in many publications.  We have also discussed pronouns, which are words used to replace a noun.  The reading test will be next week, so please encourage studying vocabulary and text features.  We will have 2 writing responses also.  Students need to provide evidence from the text in one of the 2 prompts.  Both prompts must have an intro and conclusion. Parents, please discuss with your child the importance of paying attention in class.  There are many discussions we have in class that aren't found in the textbook, notebook or on a handout.  With all of the interruptions with going to the bathroom, less

Good morning!  I am "trying" Spelling City as another resource for the students.  I set up the list for U1W4 and have included my link  https://www.spellingcity.com/view-spelling-list.html?listId=65155771.    I am hoping students can log on and practice their spelling words, listen to the pronunciation, learn the part of speech, learn the meaning and see it being used in a sentence.  If you are having trouble, please let me know. Tomorrow is a free dress down day.  If your child has a Jaden thsirt, they are encouraged to wear it, but any Spartan shirt will do.  Jeans or sweatpants are allowed. Have a great and safe night, Mrs. Herring

As of Monday November 4, students will no longer be permitted to wear shorts until the clocks change again.  If a student has gym, sweat pants may be worn. The reading test on Twins in Space has been moved to Tuesday.  I want to be sure we have adequately covered text structures, vocabulary, v-c-e spelling rule, and fragments/sentences.  Remember, the test is not on the reading story.  There is a short non-related story on the test that asks comprehension questions and reviews the skills/strategies that have been taught.  There is a short writing piece.  Students must restate the question unless specifically told not to.  Information for the answer is found back in the story.  Caps and punctuation rules apply. Students will get a new handout for the 4th story next week.  Please do not through anything away from your child's folder.  I will do that in class.  Too many times kids are blaming parents, don't know if it's true, but I'd rather if you didn't.  Thanks!
