This month the book reports are to be in the form of a comic strip (students were given the forms last week). They are due February 29th. Next month I will be reading a story to them and they will take a short test on it.

Progress reports will be sent home on Thursday. Please return them on Tuesday February 21st along with the Friday folder. Clean out your child's Friday folder and only return what needs to be.

Happy Super Bowl Sunday!!!

Students were asked on Friday to research a natural mystery of the world and bring just the name in on Monday. We will be working on a 5 week long project and this is everyone's first step. I would like to have as many "different" mysteries as possible so I suggested the student's bring in a list of mysteries in case their top choice is taken.

My homeroom spelling pretest date has changed. Since we are half way through the school year and the spelling test have been fantastic, I am offering an incentive to the class. On the first day of the week, we will take the spelling pretest. If a student scores 100% on the regular list of words, he/she will only have to do the workbook exercises, nothing else (homework choice board, abc order, sentences, copy words 5x each, etc). I am hoping to see more students strive to do better on the pretest.

Thank you to all of you that read my post. I apologize if there is work on here that I am not assigning in class. My intentions are always there to get as much in as possible, but sometimes our classroom discussions don't make that possible.

We will be doing our benchmark exams this week which will measure the student's knowledge of generalizaitons, inferrencing, conclusion, grammar skills and vocabulary skills. We will be supplementing our class time with grammar review and writing prompts.

Due January 6th, each student has an essay due. We started this in class and we brainstormed and I proofread most of them. The title is "A Hero I Know". This must be about a real person, someone that the student admires. Include characteristics of your hero that they can try to develop in themselves. Grammar and spelling count.

A hero is a person who makes a positive contribution. Heroes make the world a better place. They are human, not make believe. They struggle to overcome barriers, and they give hope and encouragement to others. Heroes may be male or female, old or young, physically strong or weak.

Entries should be typed or printed on an 8.5x11 inch paper. Entries must be legible. on the back of the entry should be: student's name, age, grade, school, teacher, word count (100-150), and the words "reading department."

Monday's homework was to write the holiday spelling list in a sentence and to make a word scramble.

Tuesday's homework is to finish making the VO flashcards that were started in class. Next test is Monday December 19th (#1-30).

Wednesday will be chorus rehearsal all day at the high school. Students are to report to homeroom and will be dismissed from there. Please remember to pack a lunch and drink!!! Students who remain in the classroom will be kept busy, but if they would like to read a book (report due Dec. 23) they may.

Thursday we will be going to the high school for the music program. Holiday spelling list pretest.

Friday will be the NSE chorus & band concert at the high school. Holiday spelling list test.

Book orders are due by Wednesday December 13th so they will be here for Christmas!

Next week.....................
Monday is the VO test (1-30). We will attend a story telling program.

There isn't any additional homework as of now. Of course, the students are always encouraged to review what it is they have learned this year. When we return after the holidays it will be business as usual!

Book reports for November are due tomorrow! Students must have it turned in tomorrow am and put in their folder.

Dec. 6th the bone activity is due. I will have bones in class tomorrow for the students that didn't have a chance to save a turkey bone. I will change the vinegar and we could document the changes. If you have the bone activity at home, keep on doing it. This is a great way to bring science home and work with your child.

Science test on Monday December 5th. Students should study the study guide. Test will be multiple choice and fill in the blank w/ a word box.

My homeroom has VO homework...they are to write their prefixes, suffixes and root words 3 times each in their grammar notebooks. There are 3 students that earned 100's on the prefixes and suffixes tests so they just write their root words. Due tomorrow.

There is no other homework. We are working on writing activities in my homeroom. During class time we will be taking the benchmark test which tests the students ability to comprehend, understand vocabulary and grammar skills. There is nothing that could be studied.

Parents...
Friday Dec. 2 4th grade will be going to the Schuylkill County Symphony. Please do not allow your child to dress down in Spartan Spirit clothes. Children should dress nicely, as always. When we return, we will have a guest speaker talking about nutrition and in the later part of the day, we will be shopping with PTO.

Your kids are not fibbing...there is no spelling choice board tonight. It will come home tomorrow night.

Also, the reading test Coyote School News is a take home test for the students to work on at home and complete before returning to school tomorrow. There were many words in the story that needed reviewing and the story was lengthier than others. I felt they might need more time than the typical 40 minutes in class. Please make sure your child has this test ready to be turned in tomorrow during class.

Due to the Reading Benchmark exams and a fire drill this week, I feel it is in the best interest of the students to move the reading test to Friday. That will also bump the reading tri-fold. The tri-fold will be given on Thursday as homework, due back on Monday. A study guide will be completed in class tomorrow and that should be utilized to study for Friday's test.

Grammar test will still be Tuesday.
VO test will still be Monday.

Thanks to the feedback of parents, I have found some out interesting and helpful tidbits.

I will be utilizing the green important papers folder. I will fill the student's mailbox throughout the week with bulletins and papers from the office and classroom and also tests. Student's will be allowed on Friday to gather all of those papers and take them home for the weekend. Tests from me that need to be signed will be stamped. If it isn't stamped you can keep it at home. I didn't realize how much of a routine you and the student's were in so I'd like to keep up with that.

Progress reports are to be returned signed!!!!!

Monday's homework:
Reading: The Horned Toad Princess test is moved to Wednesday!!! Study textbook pages 92-106; complete for hw workbook pages 33, 34, 36. Page 33 is tricky so if you are struggling, you won't be docked missed homework. On page 34, students were told to cross out #5 unless they want to do it on their own.

VO: took test today on #1-15

Grammar: HW 1. Complete a sequence of events with your life from birth until to now. Use transition words (first, second, third, now, then, before, after). 2. Make a postcard w a picture on the front and your comments or letter to a friend. Make sure the picture and the words go together. Use a piece of paper or I offered index cards in class.

Science: Herring...finish putting skeleton together on orange construction paper.

Just messing around with my blog. Seeing what positive changes I could make.

Your child ALWAYS can take his/her textbook and/or workbook home nightly or when needed to study for a test. Please, if you are like me and like to study a few nights ahead of schedule, remind your child to bring home the necessary "stuff". Just remember that whatever goes home, must come back. Quite a few of you are getting the blame for not packing your child's backpack up at night or that morning, especially when things are missing!! I always remind them that they are getting older and it is their job to make sure their bag is packed and set by the door to grab and go!

Due to not having school today, the VO test will be moved to Monday September 12th. Remember, the test is on the 10 suffixes found on page 3. If your child didn't bring the list home, the list can be accessed from my home page of my blog.

The reading test on "Because of Winn Dixie" will be tomorrow. We will be watching the movie in the afternoon.

My plans were to discuss the events of 9/11 tomorrow in class, but due to time constraints, DIBELS, and classroom pictures tomorrow, I will be moving that discussion/activity to Monday. I haven't finalized what material I am going to use, but it will be geared to 4th graders and earlier.

Even though tomorrow is Spartan Spirit Day, remember tomorrow is picture day also so you may want your child to wear something a bit more for pics than a t-shirt. Your choice of course!!

Students received a list of the 1st marking period VO words. We are going to start with suffixes, then prefixes and root words. These seem to be the hardest to remember. I will build on each test. 1st test will be suffixes, next will be suffixes and prefixes and 3rd will be suffixes, prefixes and root words. Tests will be multiple choice or matching. Welcome Back!!! We had a great 1st day! Thank you to all of the parents who were able to fill out the paperwork. If all paperwork could be returned by Friday September 2, that would be great.

Today we looked at the layout of the Reading book by doing a scavenger hunt. We will wrap that up tomorrow and begin with Because of Winn Dixie. We will also review the VO list and the students will have a list of tentative test dates.

Science will begin on Thursday.

In my homeroom, we will begin Spelling tomorrow with a tentative agenda. I'd like to be able to complete a spelling and reading lesson within a 5 day period, but already Friday is busy with a bullying assembly and the kick off pep rally. Please keep in touch with your children.

As always, Fridays will be Spartan Spirit Day. Students are allowed to wear a Spartan t-shirt, but the bottoms must be dress code appropriate unless it falls on gym day.

Guidance has added some bully news...under announcements on the NSE web page see bully form to report bullying right on our own web page--please let students know!

Very busy week!!!!!
This week we will be walking to the high school to practice for graduation so please wear appropriate footwear and be prepared for rainy weather!!!

We are also going to be placing flags in the local cemetaries...I don't know what day. Be prepared for the weather!

Wednesday evening at 6pm is 6th grade graduation at the hs auditorium. If girls are wearing dresses, please be sure they are no more than 3 inches above knee. If they are strapless or spaghetti straps, please wear a cover/sweater. Heels should be no more than 2 inches high. Boys, there isn't much to say...you may or may not wear a suit...your choice. Last year many boys wore l/s dress shirts. Polos are nice also.

Thursday is 6th grade picnic sponsored by 6th grade parents. Friday is NSE carnival day. Tuesday is Knoebel's...please wear your NSE class shirt (red tie dye) and dress code shorts/pants. No flip flops!!!

Today is VO test 1-45.

Monday May 16 is BIG VO TEST!!!

Tuesday the band students will be at high school practicing.

Wednesday the chorus students will be at high school practicing.

Wednesday May 18th AR is due.....no excuses! If you are at band/chorus/skipped school, whatever, please come to my room before the 18th then. AR MUST be printed before coming to my room as my printer currently isn't working. Anything could happen from now until then!

Last day to return library books is Monday May 16th. Please bring them to school.

If you have a book from my collection, last day to return it is Friday May 20th.

Carnival lunch papers are overdue!!!! Please get those back by the end of this week!!!!!

All of 5th period and the 6th period chorus students have spelling hw due Monday...entire list in alphabetical order, wrong words 5x each in cursive and a sentence for each wrong word. Spelling test Monday if you did not get 100 on pretest.

VO test 1-45 will be Wednesday May 11.

Chorus will have practice Tuesday and Thursday at 245 so make sure you get the work you will miss. Band will meet Wed...same for you.

Tuesday 6th grade will visit the hs for orientation...please wear good walking shoes. Thursday is Kick Butts day so again, wear footwear for being outside.

Chorus kids...you will be at the hs all day on the 18th...AR is due then so make sure I have it the 17th!!!!! I CAN NOT accept any after that!!!

Homework for tonight...

All students that did not score a 100% on the spelling pretest yesterday: write the whole list in alphabetical order, write the misspelled words 5x each (in cursive) and write the misspelled words in a good sentence. The pretest must be stapled to the top of the corrections so I know what words were wrong to begin with. The spelling test will be Friday.

Students who had 100% are exempt.

Students in period 5 and students in period 6 chorus will be assigned this same homework Friday night due Monday, test Monday!

We had a fantastic time at Baltimore's Inner Harbor yesterday! I have heard positive reports back re. student's behavior!!!!!

If any student/chaperon took pictures, I would be interested in viewing them and maybe adding them to the 6th grade slide show during graduation. Email them to me at kherring@northschuylkill.net by this Friday.

VO test on Thursday #1-30....study!!! AR is due May 18th 10 points!!! Reports due on May 18th...don't ask to print them out during class!!!!!

Very busy month of May. A yellow calendar was sent home with the students last week.

Progress reports will be sent home Friday May 6. If you do not want your child to participate in the Olweuss Bullying survey on the 9th, you need to sign the paper that was sent home last week. On May 11th, 6th grade will be going to the high school for an orientation program to help with the 7th grade transition. On May 12th, please be sure your child wears sneakers...we will be outside with TAT/SADD students from the high school.

The next VO test will be on May 11th even with the HS visitation. As the schedule fills up, I will keep you posted.

Graduation is May 25th at 630 at the hs auditorium. Details to follow.

This week there is a guest speaker in from Schuylkill County MH/MR/Drug & Alcohol Program talking to the 6th grade students. Usually this program is conducted over 4 different weeks 1 day a week but due to weather delays, PSSAs and just a busy year!!! Each day the students have a comic book with activities that can be completed at home with a parent/guardian or trusted adult. If the activities are completed together, sign the coupon on the back of the book and return the coupon from each comic book (4 in all) by Tuesday April 26th.

The next VO test #1-15 will be on April 29th. Start studying!

Grades are updated!

AR is due May 18th...10 pts...4th gr reading level or higher, 70% or higher.

Carnation order and softball t-shirts order forms are due as soon as possible.

Book orders are due Thursday April 21.

We are all reading at different levels, so be patient with me and the chapter 6-11 questions. Period 1 and period 4 are done with those question worksheets. Periods 2 & 3 were assigned for homework tonight...due tomorrow. Period 3 & 6 we will be working on them in class together and what is not finished will be homework due Wednesday.

VO test is Thursday April 14. I am aware there is a DARE field trip for students that were selected by Major Kane and those students will take their test on Friday during recess. When they are done, they may have recess. The VO test is on prefixes, suffixes and root words.

AR is due May 18th. The requirements are 4th gr reading level or above, 70% or higher on the test and 10pts total. ALL reports must be printed out and turned into me by May 18th. Please don't ask to print it out during my class...that is your BIG VO test!!!

When we finish up with Number the Stars, I will be utilizing a spelling series and we will be concentrating on spelling and recognizing sounds and digraphs and the such. Students will be tested on spelling words.

We are nearing a very busy period in 6th grade so it is important that your child pay close attention to announcements and that they take their mail home.

What crazy weather we are having!

This week we are continuing to read Number the Stars. The students are very interested in this novel. It is well written for juveniles regarding the Jewish population during WWII.

Period 4 will be working on questions for Chapters 6-11 Wednesday night for homework. Everyone else will be working on these questions Thursday night for homework.

Thursday will be the prefix and suffixes test.

Friday will be shortened periods due to an assembly. Students will use that time in my class to read AR. EVERYONE must have their AR book with them.

Report cards went home April 1 and the parent signature must be returned!!!

4th marking period begins today!!

Report cards will be going home Friday April 1...this is no joke!!!

We are continuing to read and thoroughly discuss Number the Stars. This is a great book for your children to learn the basics to the German occupation during WWII. This is through the eyes of young girls about the age of 10/11. We will be completing our first set of questions this week on chapters 1-5. There will be time in class on Wednesday and what isn't finished is for homework due Thursday. The answers must be in complete sentences/restating the question. We have been practicing this format forever!!!

AR is due May 18th!

1st VO test will be Friday April 1, 2011 on prefixes. We will then build on our next test with prefixes and suffixes and so on. Dates will be posted later for the remaining tests.

DARE graduation will be Wednesday evening at 7pm. Students are urged to attend...Major Kane does a great job with your children. Dress code approved pants with the DARE t-shirt.

What happened to spring!!!???!!!

PSSA testing is over...make-ups will be handled through the guidance office for those students that may have been absent during testing.

Chorus will meet Thursday at 2:45pm for rehearsal.
Cheerleading practice is scheduled for Wednesday after school.

The requirements for AR for the 4th marking period are: 10 pts, 70% or higher on quiz grades, 4th grade reading level or higher and students MUST turn report in to me by the due date of May 18th! If the student has chosen to do the book summaries, they are to read 6 4th grade reading level books or higher and must write 6 summaries. Due date is May 18th. I have the summary sheets.

We began reading Number the Stars together in class. After each 5 chapters, students will be given a question sheet which must be answered in complete sentences. At the end of the book, we will be working on dioramas. This is an AR book which could be read and tested on. Good luck!

There has been a change in the PSSA schedule. PSSAs will now be administered Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Monday with a test in the am only. The afternoon will be used for classes and to allow students enough time to finish the test without feeling "rushed".

In PSSA we will be working on a packet of information: suffixes, prefixes, titles, math, clocks, money. These packets will be handed out to the students Wednesday and Thursday (depending on the day I will see them) and will be due back, completed by Tuesday.

Don't forget that AR is due Friday!!! Everyone's AR is due whether I see you in class that day or not!!!! You have recess and the end of the day to see me if we don't see each other in class!

Nice weather!!!! Yeah!!!

PSSAs have started today and so far so good...everyone had a positive outlook with a big smile to boot! The PSSAs will continue Wednesday and Thursday with math in the am and reading in the pm. Lunch time was moved to 11:30 with recess at 12:00 to leave adequate time for the tests. Please be sure your child is eating a healthy meal for dinner and breakfast and getting enough sleep the night before. Arrive on time and be ready to work! Have a good book to read after you finish the test.

Friday we will begin Number the Stars...the 2nd novel.

More wintry weather!! The BIG VO test is moved to Tuesday March 8th due to the 2hr delay so the students have a full period to complete it.

Monday: reviewed circle graphs and how to determine if a graph is accurate or not.
Tuesday: BIG VO test
Wednesday: We will be looking at angles and how to find the missing angle. We will also be looking at patterns and how to find the missing term; input/output tables.
Thursday: Looking at different polygons (regular, irregular); triangles (scalene, isosceles, equilateral, right triangle, acute triangle, obtuse triangle; quadrilaterals (parallelograms, trapezoid, rectangle, rhombus, square); pentagon, hexagon, heptagon, octagon, nonagon, decagon.
Friday we will be having a presentation regarding PSSA's and how to prepare and how important it is to do your best.

The material that is covered in PSSA class can also be found in the student's math book. The PSSA book are not to be removed from the classroom.

Yearbook $ is due by March 16th.
Parents interested in chaperoning the Baltimore Inner Harbor Trip must have both clearances and $ in ASAP.

We are in for a few busy days before the holiday break!!!

Wednesday we will be having band rehearsal to prepare for band concert!
Thursday the chorus students will be at the high school ALL DAY rehearsing, so they are to bring their lunch and drinks with them!!!
Friday the band and chorus will put on their shows for their peers.
Tuesday, Dec. 21, we will be going back to the hs to hear the hs band and chorus perform.
Wednesday, Dec. 22, we will be having our holiday parties in the afternoon.
Thursday, Dec. 23, we will be dismissing early. See you in 2011!!

In class we will be wrapping up Dragon of the Lost Sea, I hope!! Some classes are a bit more ahead than others.

The VO test was moved ahead to Monday December 20th because of all of the activities. Please encourage your child to study. I may not get to spend as much time on these words as in the past. But, the kids have had this list since the beginning of the marking period and have been told to study ever since!!!!!

Christmas concert info: 12/15 Adv band 9-12 and beg band 1240-3; 12/16 chorus all day 9:00...students MUST bring OWN lunch!!! 12/16 evening concert at 7pm; 12/17 band and chorus present in school 930. Dress code clothing!

6th Grade will be collecting new hats, scarves, gloves, & socks for the Women and Childrens' Shelter. I have been doing this for 4 years now and every year has been a great success. Please bring your donation to my class by Dec. 16th and I will take the items down the week prior to Christmas.

We will continue reading Dragon of the Lost Sea. There will be an extensive, fun project at the end of the book discussing the 15 literary elements that Mrs. Bound and myself have been reviewing. More info will follow as we near the assignment.

Where has November gone???

Wednesday and Thursday we will be testing...Benchmarks/4-Sights. These tests let us know what areas need to be covered prior to the PSSA's.

There will be a VO test on Tuesday November 23rd #1-30. Please study with your child. The 1st test scores were great!!

AR is due January 12, 2011. Please continue to encourage your child to read!!

Feed a Friend is collecting non perishable food items today and Thursday. Please send in or drop off your donated items by tomorrow morning! Thanks!

I will be sending home a paper by the end of this week regarding Scholastic Book Orders. Parents, you can now order online using the code that is on the paper I am sending home to you. For every book you order online, the classroom will receive a $3.00 coupon to purchase new books for the classroom library. If there are any concerns, please contact me and I will try to help.

After the Thanksgiving holiday, I will be collecting hats, scarves, gloves, and the such for the Women and Children's Shelter in Pottsville. This will be my 4th year doing so and the shelter really appreciates the items. Please, if you have any NEW items, send them in with your child after Thanksgiving and I will make the donation prior to Christmas.

This week we will be busy with our 2nd marking period VO list. Please encourage your child to start studying NOW. I gave all of the students a new list. Unfortunately, it isn't possible for me to give every student a new copy if they lose their first one. The lists are available on my homework helpline/blog spot. The tests set up so far for 2nd marking period are: Tuesday, November 16 #1-15; Tuesday, November 23 #1-30; Thursday December 9 #1-45; Wednesday, December 22 #1-65. As always, there may be changes.

This is a very busy part of the school year: benchmarks, chorus and band practices for the shows, DARE.

My goal is to finish Dragon of the Lost Sea before the winter break. Students need to have their books with them for every class. When they don't, they lose 2 points, and they can't follow along as we read and discuss. Please encourage your child to re-read or discuss what we talked about in class.

Can you believe 2nd marking period begins Wednesday November 3rd?

Parent/teacher conferences will be held Thursday November 4th. You must contact your child's teacher if you'd like to scheduled a conference. Please do not show up without a time...we can't promise there will be time to see you. We will be here from 4-6pm. Thanks!

Report cards will be going home on Friday November 5th. Please sign and return.

The varsity football game for this weekend has been cancelled by the visiting team. Mr. Gross is looking into a replacement.

AR for the 2nd marking period began October 28th. The due date is January 12, 2011!!!!! Students are required to read 15 points. I will accept 13 points up to 15 without the student being penalized with the 0 and a missed homework assignment. Students MUST score a 70% or higher and must read a 4th grade reading level or above. If there are problems, please don't wait until January 11th to talk to me!!!!

AR is due Wednesday October 27!!! Students MUST have their points in and the final report that shows me what books were read when they come into my room. They are NOT to print them out once they're in class. That would take up too much valuable class time. Students can start taking their tests for 2nd marking period on Thursday October 28th. They will be required to read 15 points.

The BIG VO test is on Thursday October 28! Students who earn 100% will be having an ice cream with the Title I reading department at their convenience. The test is on 30 VO words and 15 prefixes, suffixes and root words. The prefixes, suffixes and root words will be mixed up this time.

On Friday I sent home their prefixes, suffixes and root words. They were to be signed and returned today. If they weren't returned, the student will be on indoor recess until it is.

PTO fundraisers are due November 7th!

This week is Red Ribbon Week. A red paper was sent home with your child last week with this week's activities: Monday~wear your shirt backwards, Tuesday~wear crazy socks, Wednesday~wear crazy hats, Thursday~wear shirts inside out, Friday~wear red school spirit shirts. Say NO to drugs.

DARE will be in Mr. Kessler's class Tuesday.

Halloween parties begin at 1:30 on Friday; parade starts at 2pm.

AR Rules

AR is up and running! All of the students are in the system!! Their passwords were reset to ABC unless they have been on already this school year and changed it themselves.

Students are required to read 4th grade book level or higher. They MUST score a 70% or HIGHER to receive the points towards their goal. 70% is a passing grade noted in our handbooks. Students for 1st marking period are required to read at least 8 points!! Students have until October 27th to get me their AR tests. Students can generate a report for me that will tell me the books they read, when they took the test, the book level and how many points they earned based on the number of correct questions. That is what I will look at to give them credit.

Week of October 4th

Monday we will be having library class during PSSA. This is when students can sign out books after Mr. Demsko conducts a lesson.

Tuesday is our VO test #1-45. Students have been going over words in school, but that's not enough. Please review with your child. After VO test, students will write in their journal, then read AR.

Wednesday we will discuss rules of divisibility. Most likely there will be a brief homework assignment to follow...worksheet page 13.

Thursday we will discuss exponents and base numbers; worksheet page 14. We will also review prefixes for VO.

Friday we will review suffixes for VO. There is going to be a pep rally for homecoming week.

Please remember to send in DARE permission slips. If papers are not sent back, student can NOT attend DARE program.

Please send in party money...$4.00.

Progress reports do NOT need to be returned. As always, check e-schoolbook for updated grades.

Party money is due...$4.00 in an envelope marked w/child's name! The more money we collect as a 6th grade, the more the students will have for their parties!!

VO test is tomorrow, Tuesday 9/28.

Students are working hard on multiplication. Friday during class students were to start pages 13 & 14. Today they finished that and for homework they have pages 15, 20 & 22. All of it is due Wednesday. It may seem like a lot, but with all of the time given, indoor recess because of the rain, 10 minutes at the end of the day before dismissal, there is adequate time. This is a good review of multiplication. There are a lot of students relying on the back cover of their composition notebooks for the multiplication table and that won't be available for PSSA's. Sutdents need to memorize!! On Thursday we will be looking at divisibility rules of division.

Friday we are kicking off our bullying program! Parents, a letter went home last week regarding Olweus Bullying program. Please talk w/your child regarding this!

Also Friday, progress reports will be sent home. Please email me with questions or concerns.

We will be completing our first round of 4Sight Benchmark tests on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week. Parents and students, please be sure you are getting enough sleep and having a good, healthy breakfast in the morning! These are important tests that tell us where you need additional help before the PSSA's.

Also, PTO has sent papers home looking for volunteers to help out during the school year with various activities. Volunteers need BOTH clearances in order to help; they are: criminal background check and child abuse.

We will continue to review vocabulary Olympic words...1st test is Friday #1-15! Don't wait to study!! And, by the end of the week, my goal is to be on chapter 4 in our Dragon of the Lost Sea book. Students need to bring that book with them to EVERY class of mine.

1st week of school

Well, the 1st week is almost over! So far, no major issues! Everyone seems to be glad to be back in school to see their friends again and get into the grove of learning!

Students should bring back all paperwork signed so we may get it to the office: weather emergency, internet access, emergency contact, media form, nurse forms, accident info.

Also, school pictures are on Thursday Sept. 9th. Please have your money and envelope. If you bring it to school, I will hold it for you until then.

NS clothing order will be going home. Deadline for ordering is October 16th. Please do not contact the school with questions, contact SLBVB@aol.com. Thanks!

Remember all Fridays or the last day of the school week is Spartan Friday. Students may wear Spartan clothing (within dress code guides). No football jerseys....sorry!

Summer Time!!!!

I am excited to be getting ready for back to school! Yes, I L-O-V-E the summer weather, but it gets rather humdrum towards the end! We are going to have a great year together!

This week there have been 2 important changes!!

Big VO test is Tuesday, May 18, 2010 NOT Wednesday. Students were made aware last Friday.

Also, the chorus/band concert for the students will be Friday May 21, 2010 NOT Thursday May 19th!! Please make note of this change.

The evening concert will still be Wednesday May 19th!

Also, AR is due May 13, 2010. Students are required to read at least a 4th grade book...nothing lower unless I spoke to them. Students are to earn 12 points. For the test scores to count, the student needs to earn a 70% or higher on the test.

Students who received a green shirt for the VO polo shirt, I need those back ASAP so orders could be placed!!!

In PSSA class, we are continuing to read Number the Stars. This is a very good book...easy to read, written in a way that keeps the students on the edge of their seats!! Students can read this on their own, but they are expected to participate in class and NOT tell what is going to happen. If a student does not bring book to class and we are reading, they will have a writing assingment and earn a zero for the class. Also, this book is an AR book and is worth 4 points.

BIG VO test on Tuesday March 23. Bring an AR book to class if you should finish early.

AR for the 4th marking period: Student's goal is 12 points. Books need to be 4th grade reading level. Students WILL get a missed homework assignment if they don't read at least 7 points. Deadline for last quiz to be handed in is May 13th. Students are not permitted to take tests during special classes or in the after school program. Students should NOT be recieving help in the form of answers being given. Explanation of a word is okay.

Thursday is our field trip. We are sending home some guidelines for the fieldtrip and upcoming events. Please read carefully.

Lots going on this week!!!

~PSSA:
Monday we reviewed prefixes, suffixes and root words; test will be Friday March 19th. Students also have sequencing homework due Thursday if they don't finish in class.

Tuesday we will not meet.

Wednesday we will be discussing bullying.

Thursday is the last day for AR to be turned in. Students will not be allowed to take tests in my classroom that day...I'd like them printed out and ready to turn in. Thanks! We will be going over the sequencing worksheet.

Friday we will testing on prefixes, suffixes and root words.

~Benchmarks will be on Tuesday March 16. We will not be passing classes, but we will have specials!

~Wednesday is St. Patty's Day and students ARE allowed to wear their NS Spartan green t-shirt if they purchased one.

~Thursday is spring pictures. Students ARE allowed to wear a NS t-shirt if they'd like. They do have to adhere to the dress code elsewise.

~Friday, permission slips are due for the 6th grade field trip to the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia.
